The moving element is supported on a steel flexure for frictionless movement and two coil pairs develop torque on the X or Y axis when energised. Torque is proportional to the excitation current which results in a deflection proportional to the excitation current. The device has been designed in such a way that it is scalable, enabling the manufacture of smaller or larger devices with similar construction subject to quantities being economically viable. The 80mm diameter device however, is approaching the upper size limit for which radial magnets are available. Larger devices can be created using segmented magnets, and, in turn, may be more readily manufactured with a square footprint.
