From a simple miniature slip ring to a complex slip ring solution
A renowned manufacturer of powder presses, specializing in the production of metal parts for metallurgy, was faced with the challenge of automating its production cell. In the past, slip rings were not used in the presses. The customer contact arose when the manufacturer was looking for a competent partner to solve the signal and power transmission in a rotating two-arm system.
Advice and suggested solutions
During an initial customer visit, we presented various solutions. The initial requirements for the slip ring were seemingly simple: 12 to 15 transmission rings, bidirectional rotation at max. 50rpm and a compact design. Our recommendations included simple miniature slip rings such as SVTS A 01 and SVTS A 03 as well as the LPS open electrical rotary union.
Growing requirements and customized solution
Over the course of the project, the requirements increased exponentially:
- 56 rings for power and signal transmission
- At least 5 million revolutions service life
- Gold/gold contact technology for interference-free signal transmission
- Aluminum housing for increased strength
- Integrated ball bearings for integral bearing of the slip ring
- Multi-point contact support with 2 pick-ups per ring and V-groove for stability in the event of vibrations.
The solution: The standard slip ring SVTS A 04-S-A-00/56-0250/0250-ST-000, which offers optimum value for money and meets all requirements.
Successful test and series production
The customer initially purchased an electrical rotating union for an extensive 8-month test phase. The result exceeded all expectations and the manufacturer then ordered two more slip rings for prototypes and ten for the first small series.
Customized assembly and plug-and-play solution
After the small series, the customer wanted the slip rings to be supplied with pre-assembled connectors in future. The requirements for the assembly were demanding: 5 Phoenix round connectors were crimped and assembled on the stator side and 1 Deltron D-Sub connector, 2 ODU flat connectors and 3 Molex flat connectors on the rotor side. A separate cable bundle delivery with 1 Molex and 1 ODU flat connector rounded off the requirements.
Successful cooperation and development
In cooperation with our supplier, we were able to offer a satisfactory plug-and-play solution. The slip rings can now be installed more quickly and easily, resulting in considerable cost and time savings. After successful sampling and practical suitability, the customer concluded a further quantity contract with us.
